Spinwheel is excited to welcome Rich to the team as our new Marketing leader! He will lead our growth and activation strategies, partnering with our GTM and Sales teams to build Spinwheel’s next phase of growth. We sat down with Rich to learn more about him, check it out!

What drew you to Spinwheel and this role?

I studied economics in college and both read and listen to a lot of content on personal finance. My career has mostly focused on marketing and operations in developer tools and software in the data ecosystem. The mission drew me in and the opportunity to help tell the world about what Spinwheel is building has me stoked.

How do you see marketing playing a key role in Spinwheel’s next stage of growth?

Marketing is everyone’s job at a company, from awareness to selection to fans that promote. My job is to give people the messaging, tools, and resources we need to help companies know how they can use Spinwheel to transform the consumer credit and payments ecosystem.

What trends in fintech excites you most right now?

I’ve used a spreadsheet my entire life to track personal finances. It works well for me but Personal Finance Management apps can be a great way for everyone to understand their liabilities, how to build credit, where they spend, and how to save for your goals. I think PFMs do great at tracking spending and saving goals, but can do much better knowing credit and how to build it.

What has impressed you about the culture at Spinwheel?

It always comes down to the people and starts with the founders. Tomas and Tushar are both great people and great founders and they have attracted wonderful people who care about the problem we are trying to solve.

How do you collaborate with other teams, like engineering, product, or sales, as you build out marketing strategies?

My personal take is that empathy makes great marketers and people that build great products. So understanding our clients, their needs, and helping every team member at a company and partners in the ecosystem.

What book, podcast, or resource has influenced how you think about marketing?

I listen to a lot of podcasts on behavioral economics. Freakonomics is the most popular and Nudge by Richard Thaler is most likely the most influential book on the topic. Influence by Robert Cialdini is one a lot of marketers have likely read.

What’s a passion project you’re excited about?

I’m working on building a curriculum for my kids around personal finance. My oldest daughter just started her freshman year of high school and the next two kids will be there soon. Finding the right combination of books, articles, and podcasts to help educate them and teach them lifelong principles to set them up for success and publish it so anyone else can use it.

Who has been a mentor or inspiration in your career journey?

My first boss and his boss helped set me up for success. Jeff Wiss and Zack Urlocker are those people. There are so many other great people I have worked with but those two set me up to listen to others (internal and external stakeholders), try things then scale, and work fast.
